My friend Ilik is one of the most incredible people I've ever met. He graduated from ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology) in Indonesia and then got a Masters in Japan. After that, he acquired a PhD in Germany. Eventually, he even became one of the most highly respected leaders in his country and the president of ITB -- all this while being an ardent Christian in the area with the most Muslims on the planet. He taught us to love the Indonesian culture and also about what it means to be a true follower of Christ. In 1990, a the Chinese government erected a monument to my grandfather who died there in a bombing during World War II and invited my aunt and uncle and all their family to come see it. My wife and I were working in Indonesia at the time and for political reasons, she needed to get a new passport from the US if we were going to go. AuthorMy wife and I have lived most of our lives outside the US. Both our youths were in Taiwan. Then we worked in Taiwan for two years, Indonesia for 9 years and China for 25 years.
